Pharmaceuticals in the Environment
The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment is becoming a major cause for concern, in part due to their ever-increasing use.
The Dessent Group are working in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Geography to research the impact of a range of pharmaceuticals on the environment.

Currently, we are developing a new analytical technique that will allow us to detect and identify antibiotic photo-intermediates, both in laboratory and real-world samples. We are also looking at improving the fundamental understanding of the transformation of synthetic cannabinoids in the aquatic environment.

With this research, we aim to improve the understanding of how pharmaceuticals travel through the environment and how they change with exposure to UV light.

This work is being funded by the Department of Chemistry, University of York, and the Government of Botswana.
